Council Tax Reclaim
Find out if you have overpaid on council tax.
With council tax paid a month (or sometimes a year) in advance, it’s common to be in credit when you move home. If so, you are entitled to this money back – but often you need to claim it, and many don’t.
Meanwhile, councils rank properties into Bands which determine how much council tax you pay. Sometimes errors are made which can lead to you wrongly overpaying council tax – sometimes for years and years.
If we’re unable to get a successful claim, you don’t have to pay us a penny.
We can begin our investigation with just a few details from you.
If required, we can obtain copies of all your paperwork for you.
What is it?
In basic terms, a council tax account will be in credit if you’ve paid more than you owe at any point. It’s estimated that £230 million is sitting unclaimed in 1.7 million closed or inactive council tax accounts, while an estimated 400,000 UK households are in the wrong band and therefore overpaying.
An account is closed while in credit usually because the resident has moved out having paid tax in advance.
Some people will set up a standing order to pay their tax only to forget to cancel it.
When a resident moves out of a council or local authority, they can be difficult to trace.
Only 8 out of 10 councils say they try to refund credit wherever possible.
If you’ve moved house since 1993, it’s always worth seeing if you have a valid claim for a council tax rebate. But if any of the following rings true, you stand a greater chance of being successful.
We put in all the hard work so you don’t have to. All we need to start taking back your slice of money is a few details.
